More than a pottery studio

Deep Blue Ceramics is a welcoming community pottery studio in Weston, Canberra, where people come to learn new skills, make beautiful things, and connect with others through clay.

Whether you're trying pottery for the very first time, developing your skills through a course, or becoming part of our thriving membership community, our goal is the same: to create a space where creativity feels accessible, enjoyable and genuinely welcoming.

We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive, supportive environment where beginners feel comfortable, experienced makers feel inspired, and everyone is encouraged to learn at their own pace.

Our Story

Deep Blue Ceramics began with a single handmade mug.

Founder Amy discovered ceramics almost by accident and quickly fell in love with the unique combination of creativity, craftspersonship and mindfulness that working with clay offers. After leaving a career in public service, she built the studio she wished had existed when she first started learning: somewhere that felt warm, encouraging and community-focused.

What began as a small dream has grown into one of Canberra's most active community pottery studios, supported by a passionate team of talented ceramic artists, teachers and studio assistants.

Our Studio

Our purpose-built studio is designed to be a place where people genuinely enjoy spending time.

We offer a wide range of experiences, including:

One-off pottery experiences such as Clay Play, Try the Wheel and Pottery Painting.
Beginner and intermediate courses in wheel throwing and handbuilding.

Meet the Team

Deep Blue Ceramics is powered by an incredible team of ceramic artists, educators and makers who bring warmth, knowledge and enthusiasm to every class.

Each member of our team has their own creative style and specialist skills, but they all share a commitment to helping every student feel welcomed, supported and inspired.

Amy

Amy is the founder of Deep Blue Ceramics.

After a career in public service, she discovered ceramics almost by accident and quickly fell in love with the unique combination of creativity, craftsmanship and community that working with clay offers. What began as a personal passion has grown into one of Canberra's most welcoming community pottery studios.

Amy believes ceramics has the power to bring people together, build confidence and create meaningful connections. She is passionate about creating an inclusive, supportive environment where everyone feels welcome, whether they're touching clay for the first time or developing their skills as an experienced maker.

Deeply committed to environmental sustainability and giving back to the community, Amy has built Deep Blue Ceramics around the values of creativity, connection and positive impact.

When she's not in the studio, you'll most likely find her underwater, exploring the ocean that continues to inspire both her life and her work.

Taylor

Taylor is an educator and ceramic artist based on Ngunnawal land. Blending her background in education with a deep passion for clay, she creates a welcoming and playful studio environment where students feel supported as they navigate the creative process.

She fell in love with the community at Deep Blue Ceramics and now enjoys teaching across all ceramics disciplines from handbuilding and painting to wheel throwing and glazing. She enjoys sharing her love of ceramics with new people and helping her students bring their artistic ideas into reality.

Taylor stepped up to be our Studio Manager in Feb 2026.

Olivia

Olivia is Deep Blue Ceramics' Head Studio Assistant and plays an integral role in keeping the studio running smoothly. From preparing the studio for classes and member sessions to supporting our makers and maintaining a welcoming creative space, she's often the friendly face you'll see around the studio.

A naturally curious and creative person, Olivia enjoys exploring a wide range of artistic hobbies including ceramics, painting and crochet. Outside the studio, you'll often find her hiking, snowboarding or spending time in nature, which continues to inspire her creativity.

Olivia believes the best creative spaces are organised, welcoming and full of encouragement. She takes great pride in creating an environment where members can relax, make, experiment and enjoy the process of working with clay.

Bron

Bron's journey with Deep Blue Ceramics began as a visitor to one of our market stalls, where a chance encounter with handmade pottery sparked a passion for working with clay.

Since then, back in 2020, ceramics has become a big part of her life. She has explored both handbuilding and wheel throwing, immersed herself in the Deep Blue community, and grown from student to member, market assistant and handbuilding teacher.

Bron understands what it's like to be a beginner, and she loves helping others discover the confidence and joy that comes from creating with clay. Her classes are relaxed, encouraging and full of enthusiasm, creating a welcoming space where everyone can enjoy the creative process.

Kate

Kate is a ceramic artist and painter creating on Ngunnawal Country. She enjoys balancing the slow, thoughtful process of working with clay with the freedom and expression of large-scale abstract painting.

For more than two years, Kate has been helping students build confidence on the pottery wheel at Deep Blue Ceramics. She has a calm, patient and joyous teaching style and loves guiding beginners as they develop new skills and discover the satisfaction of creating something with their own hands.

Kate believes everyone can learn to work with clay, and she enjoys creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable experimenting, learning and celebrating their progress.

Kristen

Kristen is a ceramic artist who feels most at home working with clay. She primarily creates functional wheel-thrown pottery, bringing it to life with playful forms, vibrant underglaze decoration and thoughtful details. She also enjoys handbuilding, sculpture and exploring a wide range of creative pursuits.

For more than two years, Kristen has been sharing her passion for ceramics with students at Deep Blue Ceramics. Her teaching style is patient, encouraging and approachable, and she loves helping people discover both the technical skills and creative confidence to enjoy working with clay.

Outside the studio, Kristen enjoys spending time in nature, whether she's longboarding, kayaking, hiking or learning to surf. That sense of curiosity, adventure and creativity shines through in both her artwork and her teaching.

Imi

Imi is a passionate ceramic artist who loves creating on the pottery wheel and experimenting with colour, texture and surface decoration through glazing. She enjoys the balance of creativity and craftsmanship that working with clay offers and is always excited to explore new techniques.

As a teacher at Deep Blue Ceramics, Imogen brings warmth, enthusiasm and encouragement to every class. She enjoys helping students build confidence, embrace the creative process and discover the satisfaction of making something with their own hands. She particularly loves teaching children and introducing new makers to the joy of clay through our Try It All program.

Outside the studio, Imogen enjoys crocheting, knitting, sewing and baking. Whatever the medium, she loves creating beautiful things by hand and sharing that passion with others.

Zoe

Zoe is a passionate ceramic artist known around the studio for her creativity, warm energy and unmistakable love of pink.

When she's not getting muddy at the wheel, you'll probably find her stitching, crocheting or creating mosaics. If it's colourful, creative and made by hand, chances are Zoe will love it.

Zoe believes working with clay is both grounding and joyful, and she's passionate about helping others experience that for themselves. Her classes are relaxed, encouraging and full of enthusiasm, creating a welcoming space where students can experiment, learn new skills and enjoy the process of making.

Georgia

Georgia is a ceramicist creating, working and living on Ngunnawal Country. A pragmatic problem solver by nature, Georgia loves to guide others through their journey with clay and aims to foster an environment of openness, care, and growth here at Deep Blue Ceramics.

Driven by creativity in its most raw, therapeutic nature, she hopes that all new students will embrace both chaos and the calm that clay can bring. When Georgia isn't getting muddy in the studio, you can find her cooking for loved ones or pursuing one of many other creative projects.

Rowan

Rowan is the behind-the-scenes problem solver who helps keep Deep Blue Ceramics running smoothly. Whether he's maintaining the studio, building something new, recycling clay, packing and unpacking kilns, setting up for markets or tackling the countless jobs that keep the wheels turning, he's always happy to lend a hand.

A talented potter in his own right, Rowan has become an increasingly familiar face in the studio, recently stepping into teaching alongside his many behind-the-scenes roles. With his calm, patient nature and practical approach, he enjoys helping students build confidence and discover the satisfaction of creating with clay.

When he's not at the studio, you'll usually find him flying his paraglider, riding his bike or enjoying the outdoors.

Pippin

Pippin is Deep Blue Ceramics' four-legged studio assistant and unofficial Chief Happiness Officer.

His favourite jobs include greeting visitors, supervising classes from a sunny spot on the floor, accepting pats from anyone willing to offer them, and reminding everyone to take the occasional break.

Pippin believes every pottery session is improved by a wagging tail, a friendly face and a calm, welcoming atmosphere. While he doesn't have much interest in making ceramics himself, he's an expert at making people feel at home.

When he's off duty, you'll usually find him chasing a ball, going for adventures or enjoying a well-earned nap.

Maricelle

Maricelle is a full-time practising ceramic artist whose work explores memory, nostalgia and identity. Drawing on her South African heritage and the Australian landscape, she creates distinctive handbuilt sculptures and wheel-thrown vessels featuring colourful, intricately layered surfaces, underglazes and sgraffito.

Passionate about both making and teaching, Maricelle loves sharing her knowledge of ceramics and encouraging others to discover their own creative voice. She believes clay has a remarkable ability to tell stories, preserve memories and transform a simple piece of earth into something deeply personal and unique.

Maricelle is currently taking some time to enjoy life with her growing family and is looking forward to returning to Deep Blue Ceramics later in 2026.

Penny

Penny brings many years of ceramics experience to Deep Blue Ceramics and loves helping students discover the satisfaction of making functional pottery they'll use and enjoy every day.

With a particular passion for wheel throwing, glazing and surface decoration, Penny enjoys sharing both practical techniques and the small tips that help students build confidence with clay. Her teaching style is calm, patient and encouraging, creating a relaxed environment where everyone feels comfortable learning at their own pace.

Outside the studio, Penny works as a veterinarian and enjoys making pottery in her home studio, where she's constantly experimenting with new glazes and filling her shelves with handmade ceramics.

Carol

Carol's passion is working with clay and creating pottery with a whimsical touch for the home and garden.

She has been working with clay for over 40 years and is always finding more to learn and experience in this amazing art form.

Carol enjoys sharing my skills and finding new ways to push the boundaries of her pottery experience.

Carol is a guest teacher of specialty workshops at Deep Blue Ceramics from time to time.
